Amara Medical Aesthetics is always there for you if you need help taking care of your skin – but you should take steps to care for it on your own as well, especially during these hot summer months when the sun can cause damage to your skin within a matter of minutes. Make sure you protect yourself and your skin this summer, by following these tips.
- The sun is important for our health and our mental health, but a little of it goes a long way, and too much of it can do permanent damage. If you do decide that you have to have a tan, limit sunbathing to 20 minutes.
- Avoid going out in the sun from 10 am to 4 pm, when the sun is at its strongest. If you do go outside, protect your skin with a long sleeve shirt, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat that provides some shade. Protect your eyes, too, with sunglasses that block UV rays.
- And of course, don’t forget the sunscreen! Even on a cloudy day, you should apply sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30. If you stay outside, don’t forget to reapply it often.
- If you’ve had bad sunburns in the past (even back in your early 20s), you need to keep an eye out for any signs of skin cancer. Having 5 or more sunburns can double your risk for melanoma, the most serious kind of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer in the United States, and 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they are 70. However, when it is detected early, it has a very high survival rate. Check your skin once a month for any spots that look suspicious, and see your doctor if you have any doubts.
